Independent Reading

Independent reading is a requirement in Writing Workshop. Almost every day, students will be given between 10 and 20 minutes to silently read a book of their choice. Students may bring books from home, borrow books form the school or local library, borrow books from Ms. La Pan or Mr. Staysniak's classroom libraries, read the newspaper, read magazines, or read on an electronic device (phone, ipad, kindle, etc). If students need help selecting something to read, they should see Ms. La Pan, Mr. Staysniak, Ms. Cupole, another teacher, or a peer for suggestions. Students document their reading each class period, and students set reading goals and reflect on their reading goals regularly. Students are also encouraged to read for an hour each night as homework.

Students are encouraged to fill out a book recommendation form. Forms are also located outside of Ms. La Pan's room. Completed forms are hung on the literacy board outside Ms. La Pan's room, so students can read what their peers are recommending. Here are sample book recommendations for Speak and for Before I Fall.
