Sergeant James Alldred
Jim enlisted into the Scots Guards aged 19 at 11 a.m. 8 July 1930 at the Drill Hall in Wigan. He served for 3 years in the 1st Battalion Scots Guards and his military conduct was described as "exemplary". Prior to this, he was a collier (sent down the pit on his 14th birthday in 1924). After discharge, Jim joined the Salford City Police in 1933 and then in the late 1930s returned to the pit. Jim, although working in a protected occupation, was called up on 1 September 1939 at the outbreak of war as he was a reservist.
