Read the article, and make notes and annotations on the bottom of page 21 of your notebook.
Do the following PhET activity.
When called, go with your group and do the following activities.
1. At Table 1, do the worksheet that goes on Page 18.
2. At Table 3, everyone grab a compass and make sure the red half of the pointer points to the N end of the magnet. If it doesn't bring it to me.
Then put it somewhere on the white paper where there isn't already an arrow.
Mark a dot at each end of the compass needles,
connect the dots,
and then put an arrow pointing to where the red needle was pointing.
Fix any arrows that seem to be pointing in the wrong direction.
Do this three times apiece, then answer Number 2 on the paper.
3. At Table 5, go to Magnetic Free Fall Activity, scroll down to the "Assembly" and "To Do" sections and do them. DROP THE PENCIL INTO THE PITCHER.
If the cardboard pieces are too loose, come get new ones from me.
What's the farthest the magnets can be apart from each other and still click together before hitting the towel in the pitcher?
4. At Table 7, your going to make something that looks like this:
Take off piece "A" and stick it to the table. Leave a small bit hanging over the edge.
Take off piece "B" and stick it on top of "A", pressing down hard. Then peel it off and put it back to where it was.
Take off piece "C" and stick it on top of "A", pressing down hard. Then peel it off and put it back to where it was.
Bring piece "A" close to piece "C" and record what happens.
Bring piece "B" close to piece "C" and record what happens.
5. At Table 9, try to stack the five hex nuts end on end on the rim of the cup as shown in the picture. You may only use the 2 cardboard tubes, the ruler, and the two bar magnets at the table.
