We have had a request from am interested pilot re a possible Mitchel wreckage in the Northern Territory. During his flying years in the NT he sighted what appeared to be aircraft wreckage on Redcliff tops, 20km south of the mouth of the Daly River. Local rumour has it a 2 SQN B-25 returned damaged from an anti shipping sweep north to the Japanese held islands. The crew bailed out as they reached the NT coast and apparently all survived. The aircraft is believed to have gone down not far inland from either Redcliff or Cliff Head (10km north of Redcliff).
He has searched all the online and book based 2 SQN records and cannot find any reference to such an event happening in over the coast in the vicinity of Redcliff or Cliff Head. He found the story of the B-25 which forced landed on the beach at Peron Island some distance to the north. He has also searched the available 18 SQN records and cannot find reference to such an event.
If any of our members have any information regarding B-25 losses in the vicinity of Redcliff or Cliff Head, NT please let me know and I will pass it on as necessary.
