Don't become a Robber Target. The less you carry the better.

In a travel guide I read: "Don't make yourself a target on the streets. Carry as little as possible ."
If you carry a backpack it is quite obvious that to robbers that you are on the move carrying all your things. Which may include:
At least a few hundred dollar in cash - more if it is a "cash only" country.
passport
credit cards
camera etc
Nude beach infested by pick pockets
Tourist shot and robbed in Rio
The single mugger,...ran from the scene, leaving behind the camera, wallet, backpack and handbag he had been trying to steal.
My comment.
I don't carry my camera visible - less risk somebody targets me. It is a thin point-and-shoot that goes in the shirt pocket.
I carry no wallet. In Rio e g I carried just a few dollars in the pocket.
I carry no back pack nor a day pack.*
If I were a lady I would not carry a handbag.*
* I give a probably safer option in my reports.
Englishman robbed and badly hurt in Sihanoukville, Cambodia.
Transported by air for treatment in England.
I was in Sihanoukville and read about an Englishman who was badly hurt in a nigh time robbery.
A comment was "But what do you expect? He was carrying a big bag at night.
Moral of the story: Carry less.
I typically has my luggage in a super market plastic bag.
A friend commented: No, it looks like you have been to Seven Eleven shopping groceries.
When I take a taxi to the airport the driver may ask where are you flying. I say, I'm only going to pick up a friend.

RIO DE JANEIRO. A 37-year-old Dutch tourist was in hospital ... after being shot twice by a mugger who attacked him and his wife during Carnival festivities, police told AFP.
