How I manage without more than 100 items in luggage and when walking around town.

Some 53 of these are from a suggested medical kit in one of the planet's favorite back packer's guide.

Why I always carry certain items in the pockets

I don't expect many readers to apply all my techniques but hopefully you will be able to take several items out of you luggage or replace them with a smaller variety.

You VS Survivorman

When you carry little luggage you may sometimes need to come up with makeshift solutions to solve problems.

It is a town and road variety of the TV series Survivorman or Man vs. Wild.

And it can certainly get much tougher for you than Man vs. Wild as you, unlike Grylls, don’t have a script, prearranged problems etc. You don’t have a camera crew and assistants who have have worked for days on your upcoming “makeshift” solutions.

If he makes a lousy leaking shelter “on a small island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean” it is not a problem as he sleeps in a five star hotel on Hawaii.

If you check in at a lousy accommodation you may have to spend the night there! If the roof leaks onto your bed the best option may your own makeshift solution.

Travel lite is about managing without a lot. From towel to nail trimmer in the luggage. From day pack to wallet what you carry on your body on town.

Part of the joys of travel for me is the various challenges of it. The lighter I pack the greater the challenge - and the fun.

If you are not into traveling light these techniques enables you to ad many nice items/functions to your gear. Just as an example, I can add 34 light long sleeve shirts and still stay below 11 lbs, 5 kg!

I have a sneaky feeling that the reason most backpackers are carrying some 35 pounds, 15 kg, is that, that what they can carry for some distance without crumbling. It is not what they need.

I think if we were able to carry 220 pounds, 100 kg, most people would carry that amount.

And for sure, if we could only carry 10 pounds, 5 kg, that would be what most people would carry unless they wanted to spend on porters.
