Science as a Process
The student demonstrates the ability to use the process of science by:
1.1 Observing - the use of the five senses to gather data about objects and events
1.2 Communicating - the use of the spoken and written words, graphs, drawings, and diagrams to share information and ideas with others
1.3 Comparing - the use of observations to ascertain similarities and differences in objects and events (position, order, color, shape, number, etc.)
1.4 Classifying - grouping objects or events according to similar properties
1.5 Measuring - the use of standard or nonstandard units to determine length, weight, volume (cups), time (morning, afternoon, night, before, after), etc
1.6 Modeling - using clay, paper-maché, natural materials, drawings, and own body in creative dramatics (acting out animal movement, float like a seed, etc.)
Concepts of Physical Science
The student demonstrates an understanding of the patterns of objects and materials by understanding:
1.7 Objects have many observable properties, including size, weight,
Shape, color, and temperature.
1.8 Objects are made of one or more materials, such as wood, paper, and metal. Objects can be described by the properties of the materials from which they are made, and those properties can be used to separate or sort a group of objects or materials.
1.9 The position or motion of an object can be described by locating it relative to another object or the background.
1.10 Materials can exist in different states – solid, liquid and gas.
Concepts of Life Science
The student demonstrates an understanding of the characteristics of organisms understanding:
1.11 Plants require air, water, nutrients and light. Animals (including people) have basic needs; including air, food, water and shelter.
1.12 Organisms can survive only in environments in which their needs can be met. Plants have different structures that serve different functions in growth, survival, and reproduction.
1.13 Animals have different structures that serve different functions in growth, survival and reproduction (including the five senses).
1.14 Plants and animals closely resemble their parents. Simple life cycles of plants and animals (people are born, become little kids, turn into big kids, teenagers, grown-ups, and elderly people / seeds sprout, turn into plants, flower, produce seeds and start again).
Concepts of Earth Science
The student demonstrates and understanding of the properties of earth materials by understanding:
1.15 Fossils provide evidence about the plants and animals that lived long ago.
1.16 Earth is composed of land (rocks and soils), gasses (air), and water.
1.17 The sun provides the light and heat necessary to maintain the temperature on earth.
1.18 Weather changes from day to day and over the seasons.
1.19 Weather can be described by measurable qualities such as: temperature (hot, cold, warm), windy or calm, and types of precipitation (snow and rain).
1.20 The sun, moon, stars, clouds, birds, and airplanes all have properties, locations, and movements that can be observed and described.
