The student will understand and utilize the four steps of “Problem Solving Strategies” throughout this course
Step 1 – READ
- Discover what information you need.
- Understand the math concepts.
- Is all the necessary information included?
- Is there extra information?
- What steps are needed to solve the problem?
- Are measurements in the same units?
- Will you need more than one step to solve the problem?
Step 2 – PLAN
- Pick one or more strategies to help solve the problem.
- Some strategies:
- Reword the problem Draw a picture
- Estimate your answer Write an equation
- Divide the problem into smaller parts Make a chart or graph
- Use a formula Work backwards
Step 3 – SOLVE
- Follow your plan and do the calculations
- Label your answer correctly
Step 4 – REFLECT
- Reread the problem
- Does your answer make sense?
- Did you answer the question?
- Check your work by recalculating
