This course will introduce students to the profession of athletic training, sports medicine, CERT (Community Emergency Response Team), First aid/CPR and emergency preparedness. It’s designed to educate the students on disaster preparedness. Students will learn how to perform basic taping/wrapping skills, emergency management skills & proper transportation skills of an injured person. The class consists of lecture, practical skills and observation. Students will have the opportunity to receive their CERT certificate from the Ventura County Fire Department.

The EWEE provides career guidance to students to ascertain their interests and aptitudes for specific careers through opportunities to observe and sample a variety of conditions of work. The EWEE includes a combination of non-paid job observations and related classroom instruction in WEE. The length of exploratory assignment may vary, depending on the aptitude of the student, the occupation being explored, the facilities of the work station, and the job classification. Students may not participate in EWEE programs if pay is received for similar work at the same work station or a similar job during hours when not assigned to the EWEE program (The student cannot replace a paid employee). Students enrolled in EWEE may be as young as 16 years of age.

Science Lab Assistant is open to qualified students for practical art or elective credit. Only students who have shown a special interest in science and have demonstrated the ability to work independently with little supervision and who have good attendance are selected for this class. Prior approval of the teacher the student will be working for is required for registration. The areas covered by this course will be determined by the particular science subject that the student is assisting with. Assignments will be designed to promote growth in various areas of science. Science Lab Assistants also assist with lab preparation, making solutions, setting up labs, and cleaning laboratory equipment. Satisfies UC/CSU entry requirements.

This course provides students with the opportunity to experience teaching in an actual classroom setting. Interns are teamed with classroom teachers for two hours per day and attend a weekly seminar with the Teachers of Tomorrow instructor to gain insight and practical experience in the teaching profession. Interns gain hands-on experience, background in theory and methods, research and review of current issues in education and information regarding university teacher education/credentialing programs. Students receive no pay but earn school credit. Evaluations are completed by on-site supervising teachers and the Teachers of Tomorrow instructor. Students must be able to provide a minimum of 90 hours of non-paid work experience per semester.

The Simi Valley Unified School District recognizes that the purpose of the Work Experience Education Program is to provide students with the kind of employment experiences that will enable them to make better career decisions and/or to develop vocational skills. These programs are considered to be a critical part of the total educational effort and are designed to enable the business/industrial community and the school to cooperate in providing quality education to the student. To earn credit, the student must attend weekly class instruction with the Work Experience teacher, work a specified number of hours, and stay working the entire semester. If a student does not complete required hours of work, variable credit may be given.
SUGGESTED PREPARATION: Must be enrolled in 11th grade or higher, have a job that meets the requirements of Work Experience Education, have a 2.0 or higher GPA from the previous semester and meet the attendance requirements.
