Building Fluency

Below you will see different fluency activities that can be adapted to be done at home. Building fluency is the backbone for comprehension to occur. Please take sometime at home to help your child become a more fluent reader.

  1. Taped Reading- This is a great individual reading activity that can be used to help students with fluency. You will need a prerecorded reading passage or a passage that you record yourself reading for your student to listen to. The student follows along as they listen to the recording of the passage the first time. They then will read in unison with the recording several more times growing more confident and faster with each reading. I think it would be great to have the student then record themselves reading so they could hear how much improvement they made. PARENTS: Your child will be bringing home a fluency passage each week that can be used for this activity. I also have MANY prerecorded passage that can be emailed to you to use as well.

  2. Timed Reading-This is another great individual reading activity that students can do to build fluency. Students will need a decodable passage at their independent reading level, a timer or stopwatch, and a chart to record their time for each read. It’s important to remind them that it is not about reading quickly but to be able to read correctly and quickly. PARENTS: In your child's fluency folder that will come home nightly you will see a chart for them to record their times on.

  3. Partner Reading- Group students of similar reading abilities and pick passages for each reader at their independent reading level. Student one will read their passage three times and then the second reader will read a different passage three times. Partner reading allows for students to be teachers. They can help each other as needed. PARENTS: This is a great activity for you to do with your child. A great way to do this at home is to take turns reading what your child is reading. You could do it by page, paragraph, or sentence. This is extremely helpful for your child because you can model what a good reader does while reading. For example, you can model how to predict, decode a word, ask questions while you're reading, read at an appropriate pace, and how you read with expression. Also, your child will love that you are reading with them!
