Setting goals helps you:
Stay focused and organized
Track your progress over time
Build motivation and confidence
Break big tasks or dreams into manageable steps
Develop skills you’ll use in school, work, and life
Did you know? Students who set specific, realistic goals are more likely to achieve academic success and feel in control of their learning.
SMART: Specific
Is your goal clear and focused on one thing?
Good Example: "I want to improve my grade in science class."
Poor Example: "I want to do better in football."
SMART: Measurable
Can you track your goal with a number?
Good Example: "I want to raise my English grade from a D to a B+."
Poor Example: "I want to get smarter in history."
SMART: Achievable
Is your goal realistic given your time and resources?
Good Example: "I want to run a mile 30 seconds faster by the end of this year."
Poor Example: "I will be the best player on the team by the end of the week."
SMART: Relevant
Does your goal match up with your priorities and values?
Good Example: "I will improve my math grade to increase my chances of university admission."
Poor Example: "I will memorize random facts just because. I don't even want to!"
SMART: Time-Bound
Does your goal have an end-date?
Good Example: "I'm planning to have this art piece completed by the end of the month."
Poor Example: "I will travel to that country someday."
I plan to increase my math grade from a C- to a B+ by the end of the semester, because I want to be an electrician, and I know math is important in that career field. I have access to my math teacher and the resources to make my goal happen - I know I can do it!
"I'm never going to reach this goal!"
Your goal is too big! Break it down; make it smaller!
"Ugh, I'm losing motivation. I can't stick to this goal!"
Check your progress more often! Celebrate those smaller wins!
“I don’t even know where to start.”
Your goal is too vague! What can you accomplish today?
“I’m not making progress fast enough!”
Uh-oh! Are your expectations realistic? Be kind to yourself! Goals take time!
"This doesn't even matter!"
Your goal isn't relevant to you! Find a reason to go after this goal – or it's time for a different goal!
