E3 Egg Drop Competition 2025
Crash Test "Egg"stravaganza
It is our hope that all schools registered for E³ will practice the engineering design process through working together, planning, designing, testing, redesigning, and reflecting before they reach competition day! So, Crash Test “Egg”stravaganza is the perfect way to accomplish this goal.
The 2025 E³ Egg Drop Competition provides a new approach with a little twist to the challenge. Each school should design and construct an innovative egg drop vehicle at their base school. The design should keep an egg safe by withstanding the crash into a brick wall. The vehicle will need to have wheels and be able to roll down the runway to check the safety of the passengers aboard. Only ONE vehicle per school may be submitted.
Specific Activity Instructions
Each participating school may submit only ONE *vehicle.
This vehicle should be designed to protect an egg from a major crash into a brick wall!
Materials:
Students are allowed to use ANY materials they wish for their design, but they must follow the criteria below. The more creative the better!
Procedure
Phase 1: The Design
Design a vehicle (must have wheels) which keeps a raw egg from cracking or breaking when crashed into a brick wall.
The apparatus design must allow for loading a fresh raw egg at the time of competition. (We will supply the egg.) It cannot come pre-loaded with an egg and you are not allowed to tape the egg in the capsule.
All components of the vehicle must be constructed and you cannot use a prefabricated vehicle. Some engineering and construction must be done.
The apparatus MUST be clearly labeled with the school name, PRIOR to
arriving at the Shelby County Instructional Services Center (SCISC).
The apparatus will be weighed before the egg is put in and the successful apparatus that is also the lightest will win. Therefore, weight is a factor so choose your materials wisely.
The attached Honesty Pledge is provided and must be printed and completed PRIOR to arriving at the Shelby County Instructional Services Center and will be turned in at the same time you turn in your apparatus at the Egg Drop Check In Table right beside registration. 2025 Honesty Pledge
Specifications:
The entire vehicle must be NO longer than 24 cm and no wider than 12 cm in order to roll down the runway, but remember the lightest weight will be the tie breaker so choose your size and materials wisely.
***The apparatus design must allow a fresh, raw egg to be inserted and removed (after the drop) on the day of the competition. (We will supply the egg.)
Phase 2: Testing
Creating a dependable vehicle takes much trial and error. It is highly doubtful you will succeed in the design, on the first try. Vehicles will most likely have to be modified or redesigned between trials.
No construction or repairs will be done on competition day.
Phase 3: Actual E3 Egg Drop Competition at the Shelby County Instructional Services Center
*Devices MUST meet the criteria presented above or they will not be in the competition.
One raw egg will be provided by E3 facilitators for each school on the day of the competition. You will turn in your Honesty Pledge and device with your school name clearly labeled when you turn in your apparatus as soon as you arrive for competition day.
One student representative will put a raw egg in each contraption upon submission for the competition under the supervision of an E3 coordinator for the event.
Hints:
Use strong materials (think about weight)
Don’t overcomplicate the design
Keep in mind in case of a TIE, the group with the
lightest weight will win.
We can’t wait to see the “egg”celent designs that are headed our way!
We are “Off the the Races” and can’t wait to see you soon!
