Disability Support

Support for disabilities and long-term illnesses

If you have a diagnosed disability or long-term illness, including mental illness, we strongly advise you to make contact with our Disability & Dyslexia Support Service (DDSS) for help and support. DDSS can also offer help and support if you are looking into getting a disability diagnosis.

You may be eligible for disability support if you have an impairment or condition that has a substantial and long-term adverse effect on your ability to carry out study-related tasks, such as:

DDSS can provide guidance and advice on setting up disability support.

For more information, please visit DDSS' webpages.

Lizzie Ibbotson is the Disability Liaison Officer (DLO) for SoMaS. If you need any advice on getting support or you have a LSP in place already but need some extra help, please contact Lizzie.

Please watch this introductory video from DDSS for more information on how the service may be able to help you.

The goal of this group is to give PGRs with a disability (or suspected disability) a chance to meet together in person.  The session runs hybrid for people who wish to attend online.  The sessions are an opportunity to access mentoring support collectively and share experiences and support.

Facebook Community Group for Disabled Students

Bethany Halliwell, Disabled Students' Representative Councillor, is working alongside Iz (Disabled Students Officer). They feel that disabled students are often quite isolated so have set up a Facebook group to create a sense of community for disabled students at the University of Sheffield. However, as a consequence of GDPR, they are unable to obtain contact details to share this group with those who need it.

The link to the Facebook group is below for students who wish to join. The group will be run by Bethany and Iz, alongside the Disabled Student Committee and they will be vigilant in ensuring that it is a safe, welcoming and encouraging place for all participants regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, economic status or anything else.
