Academic support
Your primary supervisor is your main source of academic support and you should always talk to your supervisor in the first instance about any academic, pastoral or practical issue. In addition to their primary supervisor, some students will also have a second supervisor to whom they can go if they want to consult more widely.
All students in SoMaS are also allocated an independent advisor. Your advisor will not play a day-to-day role in supervision (indeed students with two supervisors will also have an advisor). Your advisor will take an interest in your project and academic progress. Your advisor can also offer advice and guidance (on both academic and pastoral issues). You must arrange to meet with your advisor at least every six months. Your advisor will also take part in formal reviews of your progress.
The supervisor(s), advisor and the SoMaS Director of Postgraduate Research (PGR) make up each student's formal supervisory team; known in SoMaS as the student's Postgraduate Research Panel. SoMaS has a PGR Progress Monitoring Team made up of academic staff and members of the team will be involved in formal reviews of your progress. You should always discuss any issue with your supervisor first, and then if necessary talk to your advisor. If there is any matter which cannot be resolved with either your supervisor or advisor, you can seek advice from the SoMaS Director of Postgraduate Research.
