Production Skills
Selection of appropriate tools and techniques for a particular job
Using a basic multiple choice question equipment with suitable feedback, students could be presented with details of an artefact that needs to be fabricated, including either drawings or a photograph. The students can be offered options about tools and/or techniques to achieve the goal. Feedback could then be provided to illustrate the outcomes of their decision. This is an example of a simulated practical.
Deliver a written production plan
Students provide a detailed plan to build an artefact which will be built and tested by proxy. Students need to be aware of general material properties.
For example, students can provide a production plan for a wood composite sample made from ice-cream sticks and wooden glue. They need to be aware of how grains are aligned in the ice-cream sticks. The sample will have specific sizes to be tested in a three point bending geometry.
