The remote practicals playbook has been developed by the department of Multidisciplinary Engineering Education (MEE) at the University of Sheffield. Housed in the £86 million, flagship learning and teaching building, the Diamond, our team of 15 academics is dedicated to the design and delivery of practical engineering education.

prof stephen beck BSc PhD PFHEA FIMechE CEng

Stephen is the Head of Department for Multidisciplinary Engineering Education at the University of Sheffield. He believes that lectures should be to entertain, signpost and inform in that order. As well as giving enthusiastic lectures, he is interested in novel ways of teaching, assessment and providing feedback.

Dr Andrew Garrard MEng(hons) PhD CEng MIMechE SFHEA

Andrew is the Deputy Head of Department for Multidisciplinary Engineering Education at the University of Sheffield. He teaches experimental fluid mechanics in the Fluids Engineering laboratory in the Diamond and numerically modelling fluid flow using CFD. Andrew can be emailed at a.garrard@sheffield.ac.uk or on twitter @fluidsandthermo

Dr adam funnell MSCi MRes PhD MInstP MIEEE

Adam is the academic lead for computing, control and electronic engineering in the department of Multidisciplinary Engineering Education at the University of Sheffield. He believes most problems can be solved with an Arduino, a 10k resistor to ground, or both. Adam is an electronic and optical communications engineer, and his current lab teaching interests include interdisciplinary projects and blending in-lab experiences with online learning.

Dr joanna Bates

Joanna is a University Teacher in the Materials Laboratory in the Diamond, following her original role of technical team lead managing the Material Science, Bioengineering, Chemical processing engineering (MBCE) technical staff. She is responsible for leading the delivery of "the danger lab" to introduce first year engineering students to identifying risks and responsible for the induction and teacher training of all of MEE's Graduate Teaching Assistance.

Dr krys bangert BSc(hons) PhD FHEA

Krys is the Senior Technician in the Fluids Engineering Lab in the Diamond. He supports and delivers practical engineering education to undergraduate and postgraduate students and manages all aspects of laboratory operations, including sample preparation, record keeping and health and safety. He is pioneering in the field of the pedagogy of laboratory teaching and has designed and fabricated a wide variety of fluid flow experiments.

Dr rachel thorley

Rachel teaches leads on the delivery of practical engineering education to the the Science and Engineering Foundation Year in the Diamond's laboratories.

DR CHALAK OMAR

Chalak works in the Diamond integrated Pilot Plant (DiPP) and the Diamond's Analytics Lab at the University of Sheffield, where he is responsible for teaching and research in a State of Art laboratory consisting of a ConsiGma25 powder to tablet line, continuous crystalliser, filter dryer and bioreactors.
