In this episode of The Positive Gene Podcast, host Sara Kavanaugh takes the mic on the road in London with Dr. Stefania Vicari and Dr. Hannah Ditchfield. Together, they explore how research into social media is reshaping what we know about hereditary cancer, advocacy, and the very word previvor.
Hannah Ditchfield presented preliminary findings for the Period Equity Alliance: a collective of charities and organisations aiming to improve education on menstrual health, increase access to period products, and reduce the stigma surrounding menstruation. Hannah drew on our findings related to content moderation practices on social media and the impacts they have on how hereditary cancer stories are told. Content moderation is a problem in the context of menstrual health and the Period Equity Alliance were interested -and disheartened- to learn that these practices negatively impact other areas of women's health (such as documenting mastectomy experiences).
