6. Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Training

Good ED&I (Equality Diversity & Inclusion) practice is strongly positioned within our faculty and  institutional vision & values.

GTAs often have no prior ED&I training/awareness when they begin teaching our undergraduate students, and we know that this lack of training can risk shortfalls in teaching practice which negatively affects students. A huge volume of teaching interactions occur between students and GTAs - so there is a great opportunity here to improve the student experience by implementing specific, teaching-focussed ED&I training GTAs.

A specific ED&I training is used to help equip GTAs with knowledge and tools for how to apply ED&I principles in their practice.

This training comprises a 30 minute self-directed study of a website built of specific ED&I learning resources for the audience of GTAs and academic staff. DL#6.1 is a link to this website of resources. Following this, GTAs take 15 minutes completing a  google form, reflecting on what they have read and how those ideas specifically might impact their teaching/students.

Then they attend a 75 minute discussion-based workshop where they talk in more depth about the resources and strategies which they can use to make their teaching more inclusive and accessible (DL#6.2 shows the presentation used to facilitate the workshop)

Finally, a set of reflective questions (DL#6.3) are provided to permanent teaching staff to discuss with GTAs as they see fit - perhaps during meetings, training or SRDS.
