1. FHEA Development Roadmap

A great way to see development in GTAs is to incentivise them with goals of formal recognition. AdvanceHE (formally Higher Education Academy, HEA) offers recognition for University teachers and requires demonstration of continuous improvement and reflection on teaching practice.

At the GTA induction talk (see Page 2) GTAs are introduced to this concept, and they are provided with a guidance document that explains what HEA is, why they should care about it (benefits), and how to work towards getting FHEA recognition.

DL#1.1 is a roadmap document which maps this GTA development programme explicitly to the PSF (Professional Standards Framework), which AdvanceHE uses for accreditation. This document is a powerful reference guide for GTAs to use so they can see their own development journey ahead of them.

Academics will talk to GTAs about how they are progressing with their HEA application, if they have chosen to pursue it. Individual mentoring meetings are occasionally setup to help GTAs work on their weaker areas, bridge development gaps and hone their application. This investment of time is highly valued by the GTAs. The task is made easier for the academics by equipping GTAs with the document DL#1.1, and resources within it.
