Report and Support

Combating aggression and intolerance: support for students and staff

It is very important to the University and to us in the School of English that everyone – students and staff alike – can be confident they are welcome in the university and city environment, and are able to live and work positively and safely. Prejudice, abuse and intolerance of any kind, wherever it is targeted, is the concern of all of us. As a School, we express the strongest possible support for anyone made the victim of such abuse and affirm our shared commitment to fostering a community that is tolerant, inclusive and caring of one another.

While the University has a formal Report and Support system (https://reportandsupport.sheffield.ac.uk/) for addressing instances of racist, abusive or inappropriate behaviour - whether directly experienced, or witnessed – at School level we strongly encourage anybody affected by this to contact their Personal Tutor or Supervisor as soon as possible. We will listen to your concerns and can help to identify sources of support or next steps. Alternatively, you can write to english@sheffield.ac.uk in order to be put in contact with the School's Officer for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion.

It’s worth knowing that reporting through the University’s Report & Support mechanism can be anonymous, should you wish to make it so: disclosures will be addressed within 72 hours. You can also access support through the Student Advice Centre in the Students’ Union (https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/ssid/contacts/advice). If you suffer or witness any abusive behaviour that requires immediate attention, please contact the University’s Security Service on the emergency number, as follows: 0114 222 4444. This number is available anytime, 24 hours a day, and seven days a week.
