Extensions
Extensions to Assessment Deadlines
Extension requests must be made two working days before the deadline.
Extensions are only given on medical or serious personal grounds, i.e. exceptional, short-term events which are outside of a student's control and have a negative impact upon their ability to prepare for or take (sit) an assessment.
Please read the additional information about grounds for extensions below and University Guidance. You should read this before you ask for an extension.
Grounds for Seeking an Extension
Below is a non-exhaustive list of circumstances for which extensions will be considered:
Bereavement - death of close relative/significant other (which in an employment context would have led to a period of compassionate leave).
Serious short term illness/accident/hospitalisation (which in an employment context would have led to a period of sickness absence).
Deterioration or fluctuation of a disability or long term health condition.
Significant adverse personal/family circumstances.
Other significant exceptional factors for which there is evidence of stress caused, i.e. victim of crime. Evidence (police crime reference, letter from hospital/doctor treating condition, social worker letter etc.) of any of these is likely to be required by the department.
You are strongly encouraged to contact the Student Experience and Programme Delivery Support Officer for MA - englishpgt@sheffield.ac.uk and/or your Personal Tutor if you are experiencing any difficulties meeting coursework submission dates – they will be able to advise you on options relating to management of deadlines and extensions. Please always contact us at least 2 working days before a deadline if you may be unable to meet it – extensions cannot normally be agreed retrospectively. Failure to submit a piece of work may result in failure of the module and can have a significant impact on your progression with your programme of study.
Students are expected to manage their workloads so that they can meet the deadlines set by the University, including building in contingency time for dealing with unexpected minor events. Extensions are appropriate for short-term unexpected events, for longer-term circumstances you should take advice from the department about Extenuating Circumstances.
If something serious or unexpected happens to make submission of an assessment impossible, please request an extension using the form below. If the request is due to illness, supporting evidence will be needed and is to be uploaded with this form. If you do not have medical evidence, please explain this in the form.
Work submitted late without an agreed extension will have marks deducted as a penalty.
*IMPORTANT* Extension requests will not automatically be granted. If you make a request for an extension, you should continue to work towards the original deadline until you receive a response from the department. Each request will be considered individually and an extension of seven working days may be given. Students who regularly request extensions to coursework deadlines will be invited to discuss their circumstances with a member of staff.
Please be aware that Personal Tutors will be notified about extension requests.
