On June 14th and 15th 2024, the School of Education hosted the Sheffield Language and Literacies Conference in the Wave and the Diamond. The history of the event is for thirteen years from 2005 until 2018, literacy researchers, Dr. Julia Davies, Professor Jackie Marsh and Professor Kate Pahl, led this annual event devoted to new directions in literacy research. The conference became known as the best boutique conference. With the departure of colleagues from the School and the pandemic, there was a break from hosting the conference. But, international researchers kept asking when we would re-initiate the Language and Literacy Conference linked with the Literacies and Language Cluster directed by Dr. Fiona Scott.
So, in 2023, we restarted the tradition with the theme of Forging Hopeful Futures and the 2024 theme was, Towards (extra)ordinary linguistic futures and we co-planned it with Sheffield Hallam University. The Conference Committee Members were: Dr. Jessica Bradley, Dr. Karen Daniels, Dr. Chris Bailey, Dr. Aneesh Barai, Dr. Fiona Scott, Dr. Abigail Parrish, Professor Abigail Hackett, and Professor Jennifer Rowsell. The 2024 keynote speakers were Professor Kris Gutiérrez (University of California-Berkeley), Dr. Ian Cushing (Manchester Metropolitan University), Professor Julia Snell (University of Leeds), and Dr. Navan Govender. There were 65 international speakers from such places as Vietnam, Australia, Canada, the United States, and Brazil.
We look forward to continuing this tradition of excellence in the years to come and remain committed to advancing the field of literacy research.
