We are the Deep End Research Alliance (DERA) Yorkshire and Humber
Embedded Files
The Deep End Research Alliance aims to challenge health inequalities by designing and delivering primary care research which is 'inclusive by design'. We are a partnership of patients and public, GPs and academics. We work in collaboration with the Deep End Yorkshire and Humber Research cluster, with a focus of patients living in underserved areas, and/or from minoritized ethnic backgrounds.

Origins of the Deep End Movement
Origins of the Deep End Movement
The ‘Deep End’ (DE) movement originated in Glasgow, aimed at addressing the Inverse Care Law identified by Tudor Hart more than 50 years ago. Work began as formal and informal networks of general practices working together with patients and communities.
The movement has spread, with ongoing DE research programmes running across the world, highlighting the stark disparities in resource allocation and health outcomes in primary care, which are linked to socioeconomic deprivation.
In 2016, The University of Sheffield's Academic Unit of Primary Medical Care (AUPMC) supported the development of the Sheffield Deep End cluster to enable the delivery of NIHR Clinical Research within 9 GP surgeries in Sheffield most marginalised communities. Alongside the research cluster, the Deep End Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) was established with patients from the Deep End GP Surgeries.
Creation of DERA
Creation of DERA
In 2022 we received funding from the NIHR CRN (now RRDN) and Sheffiled Health and Social Care (now SPHU) to establish the Deep End Research Alliance based at the University of Sheffield. DERA aims to address 'exclusion by design' within primary care research, by partnering with underserved communities to influence what research is being funded, and ensuring research design is accessible to underserved communities.
