The Putting Me into Memory Services Study (PMIMS) will be presenting a curated Photovoice exhibition and holding parallel events on the themes of culture, ethnicity, brain health and dementia.
This is a must-see for any health professionals, third sector organisations or academics interested in providing better, more culturally informed and appropriate care. Dementia disproportionately affects people from minoritised ethnic communities and their access/uptake of services is currently low. This study has been co-produced with our partner organisations (SACMHA, ShipShape & SCCC) to understand the cultural nuances surrounding ageing and dementia in each community and inform more community-focused service design and delivery for dementia care.
Everybody is welcome - please join us for this enriching experience which celebrates our cultural differences whilst highlighting the many elements of shared humanity which bind us together
Location: The events will be held at Gathering Ground in Hillsborough Park.
This exhibition has been co-produced by the PMIMS Study research team, our community research link workers and Opus. The photos have been taken by people from the Caribbean, South Asian and Chinese communities who care for loved ones with memory concerns.
This immersive photographic exhibition will take you on a journey through the participants eyes to gain a deep understanding of;
a) Day-to-day cultural practices around ageing and dementia
b) How these communities thrive in the face of ageing and cognitive decline
c) Barriers faced when accessing services not designed to meet their cultural needs
d) Experiences of structural racism
These photo stories, narrated by seldom heard voices, provide a unique insight into unseen moments and domestic lives; an intimate patchwork of love, community, duty and resilience.
The exhibition will immerse you into each culture, whilst also reminding us of the many ways in which our core humanity overlaps; through their ‘particular’, we can all find a shared ‘universal’.
