School-Wide Math Programs

What is “The Golden Ticket”?

As a school-wide effort to build math skills, we are implementing "The Golden Ticket," which is designed to help students develop their academic math vocabulary.

Once per learning period, your students will be rewarded with a "Golden Ticket" if they:

  • Complete the math vocabulary template or journal- using the words that correlate with the math topic your student is studying during that LP.

  • Be able to model or explain the words.

Directions:

  1. Every LP, teachers check students' math vocabulary (the agreed upon templet or journal) to see if the child completed the work and

  2. Check for understanding of the vocabulary words

  3. If the student demonstrates understanding, they will receive a "Golden Ticket," and the teacher will place the student's name on the Math Vocabulary Raffle doc.

  4. Valerie will place those names in a jar, and a student will pull a name from the Jar every LP.

  5. If students collect 10 "Golden Tickets" and turn them into Valerie, they will receive a prize at the end of the year!

  • Example:

  • LP 3 Fraction Unit

    • Fraction

    • Numerator

    • Fraction Bar

    • Denominator

    • Like Denominators

    • Like Numerators

    • Unit Fraction

    • Unlike Denominators

    • Unlike Numerators

    • Proper Fraction

    • Improper Fraction

    • Mixed Number

Examples will be provided on the Math Mania website for reference.

Below are math vocabulary templates and other resources.

Overall, we hope "The Golden Ticket" helps students develop a more confident and successful mindset towards expressing their mathematical thinking.

MARS Tasks

Mars tasks focus on assessing and developing conceptual understanding. The lessons are designed to reveal and develop students’ conceptions, and misconceptions, of significant mathematical ideas and how these connect to their other knowledge. Please pick a task that correlates to your curriculum unit on a specific topic, to gauge and improve students’ level of understanding, or later in the year as review and support.

How to Get Started:

  1. Complete a MARS Task and bring it to your teacher to grade.

  2. After your teacher has graded your work and signed the top, they will return it to you. If your work has errors, you may correct them.

  3. You will need to return it to your teacher a second time for a signature verifying that your changes are correct.

Although Math before Bed is not a school-wide program, it is available to you. Math Before Bed is a fun math activity that incorporates math in bedtime stories. Reading to your children at nighttime has many benefits and for a good reason. Reading improves literacy skills and much more. Why is it that we don’t do math with our children before bed?

Math Before Bed is a collection of prompts that can inspire mathematical discussions that you and your children can have before bed, at dinner, or anytime.

Each prompt on this site shows you and your child a complex problem. Sometimes there is one right answer, and sometimes there are many correct answers. The purpose of each question is to generate a discussion about HOW you determined an answer. Once you find one solution, you should try to find another. You can complete one prompt a night or many prompts. Ask your teacher if you are interested in Math Before Bed or if you have more questions. Click on the link below to learn more.
