What is Geometry?

Geometry is the branch of mathematics concerned with the properties and relations of points, lines, angles, surfaces, and solids.

What do students need to know about geometry?

Geometry instruction begins in prekindergarten and continues through grade 12. At the end of 12th grade, students should be able to—

• Analyze characteristics and properties of two- and three-dimensional geometric shapes and develop mathematical arguments about geometric relationships

• Specify locations and describe spatial relationships using coordinate geometry and other representational systems

• Apply transformations and use symmetry to analyze mathematical situations

• Use visualization, spatial reasoning, and geometric modeling to solve problems.
