The dangers of electricity have been recognized since it was discovered and implemented into our daily lives. People can still be injured by electric shock even if they think they won't. Children are especially vulnerable due to their natural curiosity and lack of awareness.
Not only are outlets dangerous, they also pose a major inconvenience to many people attempting to locate them in low-light conditions. For example, 91.4% of people say that they have struggled to find an outlet due to being in dark rooms, meaning this problem affects many people despite previous attempts to solve it. 60 percent of people consistently face this problem, with 40% of people saying it happens sometimes and 20% of people saying it happens frequently. If there were a solution to this problem, this large portion of people who face it would be able to avoid it completely.
According to the Electrical Safety Foundation International, “Each year, approximately 2,400 children suffer severe shock and burns when they stick items into the slots of electrical receptacles – that is nearly seven children a day.”
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that “4,000 people are admitted to the emergency room due to electrical shock.”
According to the National Library of Medicine, "Almost all electrical injuries are accidental and often, preventable. If not instantly fatal, the damage associated with electrical injuries can result in the dysfunction of multiple tissues or organs."
