Demonstrate your skills and knowledge of newly learned structures in your performing tasks.
Demonstrate your spoken and written proficiency in Japanese at your level (Japanese 1).
Present favorite attractions and activities in San Francisco to your NEW friend in Saijo.
Organize your digital portfolio to show it to your friend in Saijo.
Share your accomplishments from this unit and reflect on learning Japanese this school year.
(1) Two FINAL assessments before we end this semester: [spoken] San Francisco guide and [written] self-introduction. Before you start working on those assessments, review all vocabulary and structures we have learned this school year. Use Quizlet to review vocabulary and check the grammar note handouts, your notebook, videos and google slides on the remote page for structures. Both assessments are for you to demonstrate your spoken and written proficiency levels in Japanese. Your work will be evaluated by the rubric shown on the remote site. The deadline for both assessments is Wednesday, May 27.
(2) San Francisco Guide/サンフランシスコガイド – you will create a tour guide about San Francisco for your new friend in Saijo. S/he will have access to view your digital portfolio soon. Since some of the Saijo students will visit us in March 2021, why don't we share our favorite places and activities in San Francisco? You must introduce at least FIVE attractions and/or activities in Japanese with appropriate images and credit for borrowed images. Think what San Francisco is famous for. What’s your favorite activity in the city? The criteria for your work are Contents, Organization, Accuracy, Structure usage and Vocabulary. To receive a higher grade, you must use a variety of information, structures and vocabulary in organized manners. No specific outline for this assessment. Using your creative mind is a part of your assignment’s criteria. Select High-tech or Low-tech for this assessment.
[High-Tech] – Using Adobe Spark, create a guide to introduce favorite attractions and/or activities in San Francisco. Insert images into Adobe Spark and create voice over for each page. Minimum work means “Not Passing.” This is a part of your final so make sure to demonstrate your skills and knowledge fully. Do NOT forget to give credit to all images from online. Once you finish, embed your adobe video to your digital portfolio.
[Low -Tech] – Using Vocaroo, record your speech about favorite attractions and/or activities in San Francisco. Once you finish it, embed the Vocaroo audio to your digital portfolio. You must add a few images (with titles) to this entry in your digital portfolio. Minimum work means “Not Passing.” This is a part of your final so make sure to demonstrate your skills and knowledge fully. Do NOT forget to give credit to all images from online.
(3) Final Self-Introduction/じこしょうかい – this is a written portion of your final assessments. In the “Writing Sample” section of your notebook, write a FULL self-introduction essay in Japanese. Check the Google Slides on the remote page for sample outline (pg 17-21). In order to make the most inclusive self-introduction, I highly recommend you to create a thorough outline before writing the essay.
Review the Google Slides first to check all structures we have learned. Check Quizlet to review all vocabulary we have acquired. Then, make a comprehensive outline. Check the sample on the Google Slides. You MUST include ALL subtopics that listed in the slides. Follow the slides.
Then, start writing your essay in the writing sample section of your notebook. Use a pencil so easy to ease your mistakes. You must use Hiragana / Katakana / some Kanji to write your self-introduction.
I would recommend you to proofread your essay. Did you fully include all elements in your story?
SCAN your essay as jpeg (not as PDF). You can SCAN several images to cover your entire essay. Make sure that people can read your essay through those images. If you can’t see and read it well, no one can! Upload all SCANNED images to your digital portfolio. You can use any app that lets you scan your essay. Your scanned images must be jpeg otherwise the Google Sites won't let you upload them to your digital portfolio.
(4) Digital Portfolio - Upload both evidences to your digital portfolio with your reflections. You also need to include your reflections on learning Japanese this year: what is your most accomplishment through learning Japanese? Follow the instructions carefully to make your portfolio easy to navigate.
A. The newest entry ALWAYS goes to the top. Check your digital portfolio and, if it’s necessary, re-organize all entries in the chronological order.
B. Make sure that ALL entries have a date and a title. Hard to see dates & titles? Make them bigger!
C. How about reflections? Check FIVE questions in the PINK digital portfolio handout. Did you answer all the questions for each entry?
D. Now, let’s check videos / Google Doc, anything you embedded in your digital portfolio. This is very important. Some students didn't do it right, so we can’t view some videos / documents.
First – publish your website. Then, copy your published site link.
Second – log out all SFUSD google apps (including mail), and insert the link to see your site. That’s how people view your digital portfolio.
Third – before going back to work on your digital portfolio again, check to see if a video is NOT aligned (the “play” icon must be in the middle of your video!). How about your Google Doc documents – you need to allow people to view your document – outside of SFUSD. If you need to change your video size, you need to manipulate numbers to make it smaller or larger.
E. So, now you know how people can view. Edit your digital portfolio accordingly (above A-D). Make sure to layout them nicely.
The quality of your digital portfolio is also a part of your grade. Is it easy to navigate? Well organized? Are all documents / videos viewable to the audience. Now, you can publish it again.

Demonstrate your skills and knowledge of newly learned structures in your performing tasks.
Comprehend information about your friend’s favorite character and correspond to questions from your partner.
Describe how a character (or idol) became your favorite one. (two different ones from Padlet)

Become more confident with ALL goals from this unit.
(1) Have a conversation with your friend in Japanese about favorite characters. Record the conversation and upload the audio video file (voice only is OK) to your digital portfolio.
Make an arrangement with your friend (this was the last week's HW), who is taking Japanese (any level) at Washington HS, to chat with you through spoken texts. Select an app (FaceTime, Zoom, Hangout, etc.) for oral communication.
About FIVE minutes, you and your partner will keep talking about favorite characters without any interruption. You should start your conversation with a small talk as opening remarks and continue the conversation by asking questions to each other about favorite characters (who s/he is, physical characteristics, personality, appearance). Don’t forget to make comments, too! Upload the video / audio file to YouTube (unlisted) or any other host site and embed it to your digital portfolio.
You must provide an image of your favorite character so your partner can see it and ask questions.
You are NOT allowed to prepare scripts for this assessment. You can practice as many times as you need, but if the conversation sounds like reading a script, you will receive a “NON” passing grade and have a phone conversation with sensei later.
If you can’t find a partner for the conversation, sensei is available to chat with you. You and sensei will have a zoom conversation after the zoom class this week. Text sensei via Remind to reserve your spot. You must provide an image of your favorite character so sensei can see it and ask questions.
You can also call sensei this week and chat with him about favorite characters over the phone (no video calling). Text sensei via Remind if you prefer this way.
Your performing task will be graded based on the provided rubric. If you receive “NON-Passing” grade, you will have to revise and upload it to your digital portfolio by a new deadline.
(2) Describe about TWO favorite characters orally. When did you like the character or idol? Who is s/he? Why did you like him/her? Describe physical and personal characteristics of the character / idols while adding your past experiences with the character.
(low tech) draw or copy your favorite characters in your writing sample section and add your writing sample about the characters. Call Sensei’s Google Voice at 1(415)729-5653 and leave your descriptions as a message. Take a picture of the writing sample and image and upload it to your digital portfolio. Make sure the the photo image shows your writing sample clearly.
(high tech) download an image of your favorite characters or idols. Then using Adobe Spark, create a video presentation about your favorite characters, with your descriptive speech. Embed the video presentation to your digital portfolio.
Your performing task will be graded based on the provided rubric. It must be your ORIGINAL work. If you receive “NON-Passing” grade with any reason including suspicion of using online / other assistance, you will have to revise and upload it to your digital portfolio by a new deadline.
(3) Upload both evidences to your digital portfolio with your reflections. You also need to include your opinions (answers) for the essential questions for this unit in English. Follow this guideline to have successful performing tasks for this unit.
Create a new post (entry) called “My Favorite Characters” with date.
Embed both evidences and add thorough reflections for each evidence in English / some Japanese.
Answer essential questions from this unit and describe your experiences about this distance-learning class. Your honest / reflective opinions with CLEAR examples will be helpful for us to improve.
All other online assessments should be uploaded to your digital portfolio. All of them are evidences of your efforts for this unit. Make sure to layout them nicely.
Check all images, documents and videos (too large? too small? formatted incorrectly?). The quality of your digital portfolio is also a part of your grade. Is it easy to navigate? Well organized? Are all documents / videos viewable to the audience. Log out your SFUSD account and check your web site. That’s how other people can view your site.

It's been three weeks since the school closures started. I hope you are doing well and staying healthy. We are going to start our distance learning class this coming week, but many of us are still not sure what to expect and how we learn & earn a grade. Please read the guidelines and expectations with your parents, so we all are on the same page.
to complete all assignments so that you acquire your communication skills and more knowledge of Japanese cultures in Japanese and improve your grade for this semester. Please note that you may not earn a desirable grade if no or little successful work is submitted by you.
to continue improving your Japanese so that you are able to successfully move onto the next level in the Japanese program next school year. If you are in the 1st year Japanese, you must become fluent in both Hiragana and Katakana otherwise you will not able to take the 2nd year Japanese.
to stay connected with me and other classmates through this distance-learning period. This is a challenging time for everyone. Your willingness to learn and share is a vital part of this distance learning class.
During the distance learning period, we will use familiar online Apps such as (YouTube, Vocaroo, Seesaw, Adobe Spark, Kahoot, Quizlet, Google Slide/Doc, etc.). Please make sure that you have access to those applications at home. Also you will need to upload all your evidences to your digital portfolio. That's the only way that I can evaluate your "presentational" skills in Japanese. So please do NOT forget to upload all your works to the site. If you have online access problem at home, please notify sensei by Friday, April 17. After this date, any request related to your online accessibility will not be granted.

This is the only assignment that you are expected to finish NOW for your grade (everything else is for extra credit). Please read the following instructions for how to complete this assignment and submit it successfully.
Finish your letter in Japanese first. Check your outline in your notebook and the handout. Remember the quality and thorough contents of your letter will be graded accordingly.
Now, you have two choices: "High-Tech" and "Low-Tech." If you select the "LOW-Tech," You need to write an ENGLISH version of your letter in a separate paper. It doesn't have to be exactly translated from your Japanese version. Add more information and questions that you couldn't ask in Japanese. Remember that one of the Saijo students will respond to your letter. Add some images and drawings if you wish. Follow the formats in the handout. Complete the letter in both Japanese & English. Once you finish it, mail the letter to Sensei's mail box: Mr. Tomokazu Morikawa, 2261 Market Street #557-A, San Francisco CA 94114. If this is your first time to mail a letter, ask your parents! You need a stamp ($0.55), too!! YES, you CAN fold the letter!!!
If you select "HIGH-Tech," this is what you need to do first. Scan your Japanese letter first. You can use any app to SCAN it (or if your printer can SCAN it). Do NOT take a photo (NEVER!!). SCAN your letter as a jpeg /jpg file (NOT a PDF file). Then, you need to Open Google Doc with your SFUSD account. Insert the SCANNED jpeg/jpg file as PAGE 1. Continue your letter. Now, you need to write an ENGLISH version of your letter as page 2. It doesn't have to be exactly translated from your Japanese version. Add more information and questions that you couldn't ask in Japanese. Remember that one of the Saijo students will respond to your letter. Add some images if you wish. Follow the formats in the handout. Complete your digitalized letter in both Japanese & English and submit it via Google Classroom. Please title your document as "LastNameFirstInitial." For example, "morikawat" for my case.
You MUST complete this assignment by by Saturday April 18. As sensei will mail all the letters to Saijo by April 22, after the April 18 deadline, you will NOT receive any credit for this assignment. Please finish it ASAP.
If you have worked on any "Optional" and/or "Make-up" assignments since the school closures happened, you MUST submit all the works through Google Classroom (Evidence Work from March 16 - 27) by Saturday April 4 (this Saturday!). Read the March 24 & 25 posts for more details. After April 4th, any extra works you have done will NOT be added to your Synergy grade. We will start our distance-learning class from Monday, April 6th.
