AP/Honors Contract: Required for students requesting an AP or Honors course. Located on the back of the Course Selection Sheet.
Advanced Placement (AP) and Honors courses provide the intellectual challenge and workload of college-level classes. Students should be prepared to spend significant time outside of class reading, studying, and completing assignments independently.
We encourage students to select AP or Honors courses in subjects they genuinely enjoy and are motivated to pursue at a deeper level.
Important Considerations
• Taking the AP Exam in May is encouraged but not required for any AP course.
• There is a fee for each AP exam; financial assistance is available.
• Students may enroll in a maximum of three (3) AP courses.
• Students should carefully consider commitments outside of school, including: extracurricular activities,
employment, family responsibilities
Balancing a rigorous course load with outside commitments is essential. Overextending can lead to mental
and emotional stress, as well as declining academic performance. Seniors should also consider the additional
demands of the college application process.
At Galileo, students who are ready for additional challenge may have opportunities to accelerate in math. This can include taking two math courses in the same year, completing Geometry during summer school, or moving into Precalculus Honors to prepare for AP Calculus. Acceleration is recommended for students who enjoy math, are consistently earning strong grades, and recommendations from their math teachers during course selection season.
SFUSD provides credit recovery options for students who have received a D or F as a semester grade. Counselors will review students' transcripts each semester and enroll them in the appropriate class(es). There are limited amount of spots - priority is given to 12th graders, then 11th, then 10th, and lastly 9th - and not all courses are offered (e.g. there are no credit recovery options for AP and Honors classes).
Students can attend night school in the Fall and Spring semester. Students can take up to two classes each semester. For night school, each course is a semester long that meets after school twice a week (either Monday & Wednesday and/or Tuesday & Thursday). There are also some courses that meets once a week on Saturdays from 8:00am-1:00pm.
In the summer, students can attend summer school. It is five weeks long, and students can take up to two classes. The first class is from 8:00am-10:30am and the second is from 11:00am-1:30pm.
