Students engage in online discussions when teachers post short answer questions tied to a book, article, video, etc. This is a great way to make homework social, allow all students to contribute to discussion in a short period of time, or even connect students with their peers across classes, schools, and countries.
Strategy in Action
Here, an 9th grade SFUSD student participates in an online discussion in Google Classroom debating the dystopian message in George Orwell's 1984. This allowed students to develop their thinking and strengthen their evidence through exchanging ideas prior to writing an essay on the same quesiton.
