Multimodal texts include more than one "mode" of meaning, such as alphabetic text (writing), sound, images, gesture, space, and movement. Although the term may sound unfamiliar, we read and create multimodal texts every day. For example, we listen to podcasts (sound + writing), binge watch our favorite Netflix series (sound + writing + images + movement), and compose our Instagram stories (writing + images).
While many multimodal texts are created using digital tools and technologies, multimodal texts do not have to be digital. Collages and mixed media art, picture books, comics, dance, and oral storytelling and song are are few examples.
