Weeks 1–4 (Aug. 20 – Sept. 14)
This module helps students begin their college journey with clarity, connection, and confidence. They will explore their personal identities, understand the expectations of SE 1020 and life at Southeastern, and build a sense of belonging by engaging with the people, places, and culture of campus.
Understanding syllabus expectations and navigating SE 1020 at Southeastern
Students will break down the SE 1020 course syllabus to understand how this class supports their overall college success at SLU. They'll learn how to meet expectations, stay organized, and take ownership of their Southeastern experience from day one.
Building a sense of belonging as a Southeastern Lion
Students will explore what it means to belong on campus not just socially, but academically and emotionally and how Southeastern fosters belonging through campus events, organizations, and community spaces.
Exploring community, mentorship, and support networks at SLU
From peer mentors in First-Year Forward to faculty relationships and student orgs, students will learn how to build their personal support system and understand that connection is essential to thriving at Southeastern.
Learning how to access and use Southeastern’s campus resources
Students will be introduced to key Southeastern services like the Tinsley Learning Center, University Counseling Center, Student Accessibility Services, and more and learn how to seek help, ask questions, and advocate for themselves.
Getting familiar with Southeastern’s culture, values, and traditions
Students will dive into Southeastern’s unique identity and history including our Lion pride, campus events like Gumbo YaYa, and the importance of representing SLU with integrity, respect, and heart.
Identifying the difference between high school and college mindsets at Southeastern
Students will reflect on how their responsibilities shift in a university environment where deadlines, independence, and communication matter more and how Southeastern expects students to step into active, self-aware learning.
Identifying the value of higher education in Louisiana and beyond
Students will critically examine why college still matters today especially in the South and what it means to use their Southeastern education to grow intellectually, build economic mobility, and give back to their communities.
Recognizing and overcoming imposter syndrome at a large public university
Whether you're the first in your family to attend college or just feeling unsure, this topic helps normalize self-doubt and offers tools for building confidence and claiming your space at Southeastern.
Beginning to think critically about who you are becoming at SLU
This reflective topic invites students to explore how Southeastern is shaping their identity, relationships, and values and how their first year is the beginning of who they’re becoming, not just what they’re doing.
Chapter 1: Thriving in College and Life
Covers taking ownership, navigating college culture, and understanding expectations — perfect for introducing SE 1020 and the Southeastern experience.
Chapter 2: Cultivating Motivation, Resilience, and Emotional Intelligence
Supports emotional adjustment, imposter syndrome, goal-setting, and mindset shifts from high school to college.
Chapter 12: Relationships
Explores building support systems (mentors, peers, faculty) and the importance of connection for success and belonging.
Chapter 13: Diversity and Inclusion
Helps students understand identity, inclusion, and how to find a sense of belonging in a large, diverse campus community.
Chapter 14: Wellness
Covers mental health, self-advocacy, and resource-seeking ideal for helping students use campus support systems and normalize asking for help.
