Program Variance is the term JA uses to describe any adjustment or adaptation that is different from what has been described as required, recommended, or optional. Variances are slight adaptations from the learning experience implementation standard. For example, a slight adaptation may include a variation in program duration such as one session less than the JA Learning Experience Implementation Standards, or placement such as an elementary school learning experience implemented in a high school special needs classroom.
Program Variance and Local Projects System
Development of a new JA Learning Experience for piloting, or significant adaptations from the current requirements are not a variance. We think of these activities as innovation, also known as R&D or a “Local Project.” To learn more, see Section 5. Learn more about the R&D and Local Projects Process
JA Innovation @ Work is a resource available to all JA Area staff considering development of innovation, R&D, and local content. The section includes instructional and visual design guidance, requirements for use of third-party content, a structure and process for working with vendors, evaluation direction, and much more.
R&D Applications
Is there an idea you're considering? Submit Your Concept for early feedback from JA Area leaders and JA USA staff.
Ready to submit an innovative project for approval? When your JA Area uses the local project application to share locally created materials (source files) with JA USA, these files are submitted electronically. Deadlines are:

The BizApps Site is a JA USA webpage for some program items related to class registration. On the site, JA Area staff have the ability to search for school PIN numbers, search for pre-approved variance codes, search and submit Local Project applications, search and submit Variance and Repackaged Content applications.
