Another way to Increase Fluency is through High Frequency Words and Phrases:

The Fry Sight Words (PDF Files to print) developed by Dr. Edward Fry is a list of the most common words to appear in reading materials. The Fry words are listed by sets of 50 and 100's, the frequency with which they occur and the recommendations per your child's instructional reading levels are below:

AA-D Readers: 1-50 E-J Readers: 1-100 K-M Readers: 100-600 N-P Readers: 600-1000

  1. Create card packs of sets of 10 you want 8-9 of the cards to already be known, only 1-2 should be ones that your child may not know.

  2. Review the cards 3-4 times, by showing your child the card and having them read the card aloud.

  3. If your child gets a word incorrect, tell them the correct word (students should not use their sounds to sound out these words, they essentially need to be remembered). Then have your child repeat the correct word card 3 times...the, the, the! Students can also spell the word by saying each letter name and then the word: t-h-e, the! If students are still struggling with a specific word have them do jumping jacks or step out the letters as they say the letters out loud and then the word!

  4. Sight Words Games are the number one way that to review sight words!! This collection of sight words games gives children opportunities to practice their sight words and build mastery while also having fun! See Below
