READING

"Intellectual freedom is the right of every individual to both seek and receive information from all points of view without restriction. It provides for free access to all expressions of ideas through which any and all sides of a question, cause or movement may be explored."         - American Library Association

The HMS library provides a collection of reading materials that meet the curricular needs of the school, as well as current reading materials to satisfy a variety of student interests.  We recognize that the collection of materials should reflect the diverse needs of the students and staff members that we serve.

Students and staff also have access to electronic books (ebooks) and audio books through Sora.

Use the tabs above to view the collection of reading materials, eBooks, reading suggestions, and summer reading information.

As a member of the SAILS library network, we can borrow materials from other member libraries and have them delivered to HMS. Students check these items out just like they are one of our own books! We receive delivery on Tuesday & Thursdays.

You can request a book while at the library, or click here to access the catalog.  Log in to your HMS library account to place holds, renew your checked out materials and more!  (Student library accounts are your last name and first initial with year of graduation (smithj2030).  Please contact your school librarian for your PIN).

All students and staff have access to Sora eBooks and audiobooks.  These can be accessed/read on student Chromebooks, as well as on a tablet using the free Sora app.

Access Sora on your Chromebook at https://soraapp.com/welcome

Open eBooks

Hurley Middle School students also have access to a collection of eBooks through Open eBooks. These ebooks are available by downloading their free app to an  iOS or Android device.
Students who are interested in Open eBooks should request a login from the librarian.

MackinVIA contains many classic novels. These eBooks can be accessed by multiple users at the same time, either at school or at home!

Library Account FAQs

All students have a library account which is formatted as last name, first initial, and year of graduation. Example:  John Smith who is a 6th grader would have a library account of SMITHJ2030.  This account is used to check out materials in the library. Students can also access their library account online to view checkouts, renew materials, place holds, and more!  You may visit or email the library for assistance with retrieving your PIN.

Please note: we cannot use or view public library accounts at HMS, and your HMS account cannot be used at a public library.

Book Borrowing Policy

All books are loaned for two weeks.  Students may borrow  two items at one time.

A book may be renewed once, as long as there are no holds on that book.

Borrowers are responsible for items checked out to their library account. Lost or badly damaged books must be replaced by the borrower.

There are no overdue fines, but students are expected to show responsibility by returning their materials on time.

SAILS Policy & Procedure

Students may place holds on materials belonging to libraries in the SAILS library network, or ask the librarian for assistance.

Once a library receives a hold request, they place that item in the delivery system. Unless the item is already checked out or otherwise unavailable, your item will arrive at HMS in about one week. Delivery is made to HMS on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

You will be notified when your item arrives at HMS.  When you are done with your item, return it to the HMS library, just as you would with any other library material.

If an item borrowed from another SAILS library is lost or damaged, replacement procedure will depend on the owning library's policies.
