Outer Banks
“Why do they never tell us that you are poor devils like us, that your mothers are just as anxious as ours, and that we have the same fear of death, and the same dying and the same agony--forgive me, comrade; how could you be my enemy?”
“What are you talking about Duncan?”
“Oh nothing Travis, just observing your ineffable courage on the battlefield.”
“What’s enfable? ”
“Not enfable, Travis, it’s pronounced in-eh-feh-”
“Aah! You got my shirt wet! No fair, Jake took the good squirt gun.”
“Should’ve had better situational awareness Trav. Check your corners trooper.”
“Stop telling me what to do! You’re my cousin not my teacher!”
“Yeah, your older cousin, so watch your mouth or I’ll throw you in the lake, boy.”
“You won’t!”
“Uh, no, I will.”
“You won’t! You won’t you won’t you wo- GAH!”
“Good shot Jake! And nice timing too. Looks like Fritz has a beat on you Trav. Are you gonna get up and fight jerry or let old Francia fall?”
“Stop Duncan!”
“Quick boy! The Huns are rushing no man’s land! They’ll soon be in your trenches, bayonets fixed and gleaming, ready to gut you standing!”
“I don’t even know what you’re talking about!”
“Ah but your time is up Franks. Zis is vehr you die! Gas attack! Flee or perish as your skin turns black and your lungs melt!”
“That’s not fair Duncan! You can’t use the hose!”
“BOYS!”
“…”
“Heh, sorry for the shouting gran.”
“What are you torturing your little cousins for? It sounds like the Somme out here.”
Destiny
“Do you think the universe fights for souls to be together?”
“I don’t know. I mean it can’t be coincidence that people meet their “person” in random places.”
“There are so many places and faces. Every successful love story I’ve heard has started with a random but significant moment. My parents, for example. My mom saw my dad playing in a band onstage and “had to meet him.” She pursued and he was into it.
“Oh yeah? I feel like love at first sight from a distance is a thing kind of. Like if you’re in a crowd and you spot out one person and feel like you want them.."
“Yeah I get that. Or like how you run into someone from a different time in your life and they’re completely transformed but there’s a connection.”
“I guess..I feel like there’s a reason we think about certain people. I always find myself running into people I’m thinking about, even if they are THE most random person.”
“Me too. I think everything is predestined and we’re mentally prepared for it even if we don’t realize it.”
“Totally. I feel like we’re all part of a huge movie to be honest. Like everyone has a script that they’re “supposed to follow.” So in that case, I think the universe doesn’t necessarily fight for souls to be together. Rather, it’s already been scripted who will end up together. That makes some sense, yeah?”
“Yeah”
Scene 7 - Dialogue
“You know you can’t run forever.”
“I can hide.”
“Everyone knows your face, you’re on the news 24 hours a day, and it’s always that same ugly photo, the one where your scars look darker than they are.”
“It's the only one they have left. What else can they show?”
“People want answers, what are you going to do, kill yourself?”
“I’m no coward.”
“You can’t stay here.”
“I’ll be gone tomorrow, you won’t even get the chance to say goodbye.”
“And no one will know that you were here.”
“I’m keeping your best interests in mind too, you know that.”
“Where are you going?”
“I know a man who has some skills that I can put to use. Can you close those blinds? My eyes still haven’t adjusted to the light.”
“Sorry, I’d forgotten how long you’ve been down there.”
“You’d be surprised how easily you can get used to the smell when it’s all your nose takes in day and night. Food lost all taste because of how bad it was.”
“I tried my best, but I couldn’t clean it all out. Blood really sticks to everything, even concrete. And why are you complaining? I could’ve kicked you to the curb, and you wouldn’t have lasted much longer on your own.”
“You don’t know that.”
“Yes I do. They nearly searched the house last week but I told them I was too sick for them to come in.”
“Well you were.”
“They could’ve thought I was lying.”
“But they didn’t.”
“We were lucky.”
“I won’t push it much further.”
“What will your friend do for you?”
“Is it really your business?”
“After how long you’ve been here, you’re my business.”
“He’s a surgeon. He can...change me.”
“Change you? Change you how?”
“He can give me a new face.”
“And your scars? No amount of surgery can fix those.”
“I told you, it's a new face.”
“...where is it from?”
“That information wasn’t part of our agreement.”
“And then what?”
“I disappear.”
“It’s too easy, they’ll catch you for sure.”
“Contemplate my odds. This is my best chance at leading a life worth living.”
“There’s no life worth living with a conscious like yours.”
“I dare you to say that again.”
“...burn your sheets before you leave.”
