The Cotton Gin was made to reduce the amount of time it took to remove the seeds from the cotton itself. This was trying to remove the agonizing pain from picking and separating the cotton.
Eli Whitney was born on December 8, 1765, in Westborough, Massachusetts. Eli Whitney's father was a farmer who was also a talented inventor and mechanic. In 1792, he graduated from Yale College, which is now Yale University. Ms. Greene and her Plantation Manager, Phineas Miller, both went to Whitney to discuss their problem with how harsh the conditions were when separating the cotton and seeds. In the year 1794, the Cotton Gin was born.
He later received a patent for his invention within the same year because it had so much success. Eventually, the Cotton Gin was moved up from a hand cranked machine, to a self powering rotate machine.
The Cotton Gin was made to separate the Cotton seeds from the cotton fibers, all with the crank of a handle. This rapidly sped up the process of cotton production by Astronomical amounts. This was a way easier alternative other than having to hand separate the seeds, which took days.
The impact of the Cotton Gin increased how many Enslaved Americans were being bought. Since plantation owners were having a huge success with a rapid increase in cotton picking.
They decided to buy more slaves to increase the amount of cotton to be sold even more. This was showing a huge increase. This was the way faster and way more profitable way of making money. But of course this was for the south.
The North based their income off of how much cotton was produced in the south. Since the North mainly based themselves off of textiles.
So the more cotton that came in from the south, the more money they made. This was from making clothes, towels, garments, and any more cotton based utilities.
Even though the Cotton Gin was a huge success and greatly reduced the agony Enslaved African Americans had deal with. Plantation owners decided to purchase more Enslaved Americans to continue working. Since they were producing cotton faster than ever before, they tried to double and hopefully triple their average income thanks to the Cotton Gin and its fast paced enhancements. The Cotton Gin made it easier for Enslaved Americans to separate the cotton way easier that having to hand pick out the seeds.
