William Nicholson, who was born on December 13, 1753 in London. Nicholson worked in the Shipping/trading industry, but the soon settled in london where he learnt mathematices and scientific studies. This is also where he started publishing books on philosophsy. Nicholson then acted as a patent agent, and took out four patents for inventions of his own, in 1790, 1802, 1806, and 1812 (the last was not completed). On 29 April 1790 he patented (No. 1748) a machine for printing on linen, cotton, woollen, and other articles, by means of ‘blocks, formes, types, plates, and originals, which were to be firmly imposed upon a cylindrical surface in the same manner as common letter is imposed upon a flat stone.’ ‘From the mention of “colouring cylinder” and “paper-hangings, floorcloths, cottons, linens, woollens, leather, skin, and every other flexible material”. Richard march Hoe then contributed to redefining the cylinder press and created the rotary printing press. But in 1811 Friedrich Koenig created a steam powered version instead of being hand cranked.

The First Cylinder printing press was made in 1789 which William Nicholson which could print on many materials such as paper, linen and cotten he then patented it in 1790. Nicholson's design was powered manually in a rotary style, there then was a Horse powered version which was much more effective. Then on in 1811 Friedrich Koenig Created Cylinder printing/flatbed press which was steam powered and used a ink roller for its printing. This alone drastically impacted production levels, economics and labor work.
