The first Clipper Ship was created in 1845, called the Rainbow, it was designed by John Willis Griffiths. The clipper ships were known for, fast speed, grace, and beauty. These ships were known for having brought the finest of tea from India. These ships were so groundbreaking due to their speed and ability to serve many different purposes such as: trading, human transportation, and shipment. We needed these ships because we had to transport perishable goods far and fast which was what this ship was perfect for.
The first clipper is debatable as many people consider different clippers to not be up to standards with the ones that became famous so people consider different clipper ships to be the first one. These ships originated in Baltimore in the 1770's, at the time the ships were used for trade around the 13 colonies, however they rose to fame during the war of 1812 when they were used as blockades. In 1845 the first extreme clipper was built called "Rainbow", at that time it was the fastest sailboat ever. It was designed by John Willis Griffiths and it was a boat of pointy and curved features. J.W.(John Willis Griffiths) built the ship in New York. These ships went from speedy ships used as barricades, to the fastest ships known before steamboats. In 1851 the challenger was built, it is to this day known as the most beautiful and fast clipper built in the USA.
The impact Clippers had on the 1800's was massive. First off, the impact on trade was evident. The trip from south east Asia alone took 12 to 15 months with the invention of clippers this length was cut in half. This increased speed was greatly necessary in america, they needed to get tea from Asia. Clippers also helped bring goods and resources to the settlers from the California Gold Rush. These ships also played a large part in the war of 1812. They were a huge disruption to British shipping as a barricade. Another impact was their excelled ability to travel upon open waters, faster than ever before. They also were passenger ships due to their luxuriousness. People would also start to ship more expensive goods on these boats due to them being more luxurious, strong, and fast.
South:
The impact of clipper ships on the south was not huge but there were some impacts. For starters the immigration was impacted. In 1870-1900 the immigration was large, however the immigrants typically settled in the north.
North:
The big cities in the North were where the imports would be sent. So it caused faster shipments which was detrimental for the North. It also affected the immigration to the North with a total of 12 million immigrants to the United states and the majority of them decided on living in the Northern big cities. Clipper Ships gave job opportunities in shipping and ship building.
