In 1819 Elias Howe, the inventor of the sewing machine, was born. Howe's childhood was good. He lived on a farm with his father and at the age of 16 he moved to Lowell Massachusetts looking for work. He worked at a machine shop and was really successful. He had a really weak left arm and knew he couldn't work forever so he needed to find a solution. It was a long process but he created the sewing machine on September 10, 1846. The sewing machine helped the entire nation. It helped women take less time when creating clothes allowing new items to be made. It's still used by millions of people today!
In 1845 he did create the sewing machine but very soon after he added improvements to it. This was not the first intervention. There were prior ideas and models but Elias Howe made the one that we still use today. Elias Howe made this to help his family and make the clothing business easier.Howe's model used a grooved and curved eye-pointed needle carried by a vibrating arm. The needle was provided with thread from a spool. Loops of thread from the needle were locked by a second thread carried by a shuttle, which moved through the loop by means of reciprocating drivers. He got the sewing machine patented in 1846 very soon after his first model was made. The sewing machine was made in Cambridge Massachusetts. It has also updated a ton since it was first created.
The sewing machine changed the way that the clothing business worked. More items were made at times which resulted in new clothes being made and new materials were being used allowing more comfort. This also helped lower the cost of all clothing being made and helped the workers get more income for their family. This was an important tool that helped America completely. This helped us rely on factory work and allowed us to improve the fashion on the 1800s
This invention gave another boost to northern industrialization, specifically the ready-made clothing industry. Machine-made clothes fit better and were less expensive than homespun clothes. The sewing machine also opened up a new line of employment for women, who began working in the clothing factories. Although there were many positive aspects to the sewing machine, there were also many negative things.Without guards, machines and broken needles can injure hands and other body parts. Repeating the same movements over and over harms the back, arms, wrists, and hands. Noisy sewing machines harm hearing. Other than that the sewing machine helped with plenty of job opportunities for many people and will continue to be used in the future.
