Project: Allmannajuvet Zinc Mine Museum / Rest Area
Architect: Peter Zumthor
Year of Completion: 2016
Place: Sauda, Ryfylke, Norway
The Allmannajuvet Rest Area is a unique architectural installation designed by Peter Zumthor along Norway’s National Tourist Route. Built at the site of abandoned zinc mines (1881–1899), the project includes a gallery, café, and service buildings connected by paths and stairs. The design reflects the harsh life of miners, using simple, industrial-style structures that blend into the rugged landscape. It acts as both a memorial and a museum, bringing the history of the mining community back to life through architecture.
Plan
The plan of the Allmannajuvet Rest Area teaches how architecture can be broken into smaller volumes and carefully placed to respond to the natural landscape, creating a meaningful journey through movement and spacing rather than a single rigid form.
Section
The section shows how the building adapts to the steep terrain by being lightly elevated on stilts, using minimal intervention while letting the roof and changes in height shape the spatial experience.
