Experiment 1 : Preparing different mix of concrete and letting it set by itself.
Apparatus and Materials Required : Cement, sand, water (200 ml per mix), plastic sheet for placing the mix.
Procedure :
Preparing different mixes of concrete with varying rations of cement to sand (Cement:sand = 1:0 / 1:1 / 1:2 / 1:4).
Placing the mix on a plastic sheet to observe the form and texture the mix takes, along with the flowability.
Letting the mix dry and record observations while it's setting and post it's set.
Cement:sand = 1:0
Observation:
(While mixing and casting)
While mixing, the mixture, it felt very smooth and fluedic.
After placing the mix on the sheet, it spread across without forming a blob.
Little mix stuck on thapi while placing on the sheet.
Result
Due to no sand, the mix had a very smooth and shiny texture.
The resulting form was a very flat/thin plate and it spread across without forming a blob.
Extremely less, no air bubbles were seen as no sand was present in the mix.
Cement:sand = 1:1
Observation:
While mixing and casting
While mixing the mixture, it felt a bit rough and granular.
After placing the mix on the sheet, it spread a little and formed a small blob
Very little mix stuck on thapi while placing on the sheet.
Result:
Due to some sand, the mix had a bit rough and matte texture.
The resulting form was a flat/thin plate and it spread across with forming a small blob.
Almost no air bubbles were seen as very less sand was present in the mix.
Cement:sand = 1:2
Observation:
While mixing and casting:
While mixing the mixture, it felt rough and granular.
After placing the mix on the sheet, it didn't spread much and formed a blob
Extremely little mix stuck on thapi while placing on the sheet.
Result:
Due to sand, the mix had a rough and grainy texture.
The resulting form was blob like and it spread across a little.
Few air bubbles were seen as sand was present in the mix.
Cement:sand = 1:4
Observation:
While mixing and casting:
While mixing the mixture, it felt very rough and granular.
After placing the mix on the sheet, it didn't spread formed a blob.
Almost no mix stuck on thapi while placing on the sheet.
Result:
Due to high sand content, the mix had a very rough and grainy texture.
The resulting form was blob like and it did not spread across.
Many air bubbles were seen as sand was present in the mix.
The texture and form of concrete (the material itself) mainly depends on the amount of sand mixed in it. Less sand leads to a smooth and shiny texture with the form being spread across, whereas more sand leads to a rough, granular and matte texture with the overall form being a blob. These observations help in understanding material gestures.
