The Earl Warren Physical Education program emphasizes a wide range of fitness components. The focus of the primary fitness components includes year long development, improvement and maintenance of cardiovascular endurance, muscular endurance, muscular strength, flexibility and body composition. In addition to the above fitness components, we also offer a wide range of traditional and non-traditional sports and activities which may include: Volleyball, soccer, pickleball, street hockey, softball, pig ball, flag football, handball, dodge ball, fleetball, ping pong, scoop ball, yoga, dance, basketball, frisbee, rocks, prison ball, interclass competitions, large group recreational activities and state mandated fitness testing.
Most units are approximately 3 weeks in length.
Each student can purchase PE clothes from the main office (858-755-1558 ext. 4405) for $25, shirts $10 and shorts $15. If purchasing PE clothes is an issue please contact PE teacher directly or the main office and we can provide you with PE clothes free of charge.
Other clothing options include the following: Earl Warren Spirit Day shirts, solid grey t-shirts, solid blue workout shorts (shorts cannot have pockets), Earl Warren sweat pants or solid blue sweat pants (sweats cannot have pockets). All PE clothes will be labeled with students name.
Shoes must be closed toed and appropriate for athletics and physical activity.
Students must wear their own PE clothes, students cannot share PE clothes or wear school clothes. A detention is the consequence for sharing PE clothes (both students) or purposely dressing incorrectly and trying to sneak it past teacher.
Due to safety hazards, the following are not allowed during class: Any article of clothing with pockets, opened toed shoes, sandals, slip on shoes, boots, jewelry -- necklaces, bracelets, hoop or dangling earrings (studded earrings are OK), watches. Please note, watches are OK during warm ups, stretches and workouts but must be removed during the certain activities. Headbands and baseball hats are ok (beanies or hats that cover students ears/faces are not allowed).
Each student is afforded 4 full sets of loaner PE clothes (or 8 individual articles of clothing) per semester.
See below examples:
1 pair of loaner shorts + 1 loaner shirt = 1 full loaner set
1 loaner shirt = 1/2 loaner set
2 pair of loaner shorts = 1 loaner set
Before a student goes over the limit for using loaner PE clothes in the semester the student's parent(s) will be notified via email.
Parents may provide their student with a written note to excuse them from PE class for up to three consecutive classes. This note may be sent with the student or emailed directly to the teacher prior to the start of your student's class. You may also call the attendance office (858-755-1558 ext. 4404) and they will relay the message to the teacher. Please do not call the PE offices directly, as we are not always able to answer the phone and we may not receive your voicemail until after class has concluded.
Parent notes should state the reason why the student cannot participate and include the date(s) the parent is excusing the student from participation and activities. If you would like your student to take part in some form of limited participation please indicate so on the note.
We request that students bring a physical note from their parent to present to their teacher at the start of class.
Per district policy, Parent notes are accepted for no more than three consecutive classes. For an excuse exceeding three classes a doctor’s note is required.
Students with parent notes will dress out and remain with their teacher and class during transitions and instructions. During activities students have the option to walk the track/black top or sit out.
NOTE: Students DO NOT earn class credit if they do not participate due to a parent note. Students with excused absences or parent notes, such as the following, illness, injury, medical appointments, family emergencies, etc.— are all governed by District Board Policy and California State Education Code. If a student is excused they will have the opportunity to earn credit for assignments, activities or classes missed. Please see the make up policy below.
Students with excused absences and parent notes have the option to make up missed class credit. All make ups for each quarters grading period must be completed before the last day of each quarter.
PE make ups are offered 1 - 2 times a month and are scheduled at the beginning of each month.
Make ups begin promptly at the start of lunch at 12:20, depending on the student they take approximately 10-15 minutes to complete.
During the first semester make ups consist of 4 - 2 x 2's and the second semester 4 - 3 x 1's.
Students are allowed to and encouraged to complete make ups ahead of time or prior to a day they know they will be absent. We call this putting a make up in the "bank."
Students who have a doctor's note or a special circumstance and cannot participate in make ups must see their teacher to make arrangements prior to the end of the grading period.
Students with an UNEXCUSED absence, truancy, class non-participant, or a class/school suspension may not be allowed an opportunity to make up missed daily points/class credit.
Students will be marked tardy if they are not sitting on their attendance # when the bell rings at the start and end of the class period.
Doctor notes are for extenuating circumstances.
Doctor notes must include a start and end date.
Start dates can be backdated if the injury occurred prior to getting the doctor's note. If exact end date is unknown please state the next doctor appointment as the end date.
If the student can take part in some form of limited participation please have the physician indicate so on the note.
Doctor notes may be sent with the student, emailed to the teacher or main office.
Students who are on doctor notes that exceed one week (3 class periods) in length will be required to complete PE equivalent assignments in place of regular PE activities in order to earn their class grade.
Students may work on doctor note assignments during PE class time.
Students with doctor notes will not dress out unless otherwise stated.
Each student will be issued an Earl Warren-provided lock for their PE locker (personal locks may not be used). It is the student’s responsibility to be accountable for their lock. If a lock is lost or damaged, the student must reimburse Earl Warren $5 to replace the lock.
Students are required to have their locker #, combination and lock serial # recorded in their personal materials/binder. It is required that each student have their locker information each day. If a student loses or misplaces their information they should inform their teacher.
PLEASE LOCK ALL VALUABLES IN LOCKER!
Directions for opening locks is below:
First, turn the dial three times to the right to clear any previous numbers and then stop on the first number of the combination. Next, turn left, passing the first number, then stop at the second number of the combination. Last, turn right, stopping immediately on the third and final number of the combination.
While individual teachers’ points and grading systems may vary, what is consistent is that Earl Warren Physical Education students earn PE grades by completing tasks, meeting their teacher’s PE class expectations and rules based on state and national PE standards. Students and parents may check PE class grades by checking Aeries, contacting their individual teacher or through Google Classroom. Class grading syllabi are located in Google Classroom. Parents, please encourage your students to contact their teacher before you reach out directly to the teacher.
