WHAT IS THE REO TUTORING CENTER?
The mission of the REO Tutoring Center is to positively support and challenge students living on campus in their personal growth, sense of belonging, social responsibility, and active learning. Through engaging tutoring interactions and academic programs, the REO Tutoring Center is dedicated to developing and enhancing residents' academic success so they may develop holistically as scholars.
Whether students are looking for extra support in a challenging course or to sharpen their skills, the REO Tutoring Center and tutoring team is committed to helping students achieve their academic goals through personalized assistance in a wide range of subjects.
Tutors work with students to:
Improve understanding of course materials
Prepare for upcoming exams and assignments
Enhance study and time management skills
The REO Tutoring Center is located in South Campus Plaza - South, 2nd floor, Room 218 above the Broken Yolk Cafe, with hours of operation being Monday - Thursday, 1:00pm - 7:00pm (PST) except on campus holidays and closures. Rates may change on a semester basis.
Minimum of 6 hours per week and a maximum of 20 hours per week during operating hours at South Campus Plaza - South, 2nd Floor, Room 218 above the Broken Yolk Cafe (20 hours total per week for all on-campus positions if working another on-campus job). The REO Tutoring Center hours of operation are Monday - Thursday, 1:00pm - 7:00pm (PST) except on campus holidays and closures.
Hiring 3 positions for Spring 2026 Semester for lower-division BIOL, CHEM, ENS, PHYS, and PSY courses
Position Duration: January 2026 - May 2026 (with potential for rehire for the 2026 - 2027 academic year)
WHAT IS AN REO TUTORING CENTER TUTOR?
REO Tutoring Center Tutors are currently enrolled San Diego State University students who provide tutoring and academic support services to students living in the residence halls. All Tutors are at least sophomore-standing, must maintain a 3.5 SDSU GPA or above, and must have passed courses they tutor in with a Letter Grade of A- or above. Tutors are compensated $17.86/hr (2025-2026) and work between 6 and 20 hours shifts per week in the South Campus Plaza - South REO Tutoring Center. If a tutor has another job on-campus, they can only work 20 hours total for all on-campus positions.
Conduct individual tutoring sessions with residents based on subject needs
Assess the needs of individual students and refer to resources as necessary
Attend regular Tutoring staff meetings and professional development involvements/trainings
Developing, planning, implementing, facilitating, and evaluating academic support programs which may include collaborating and communicating with campus and community partners
Support day-to-day operations and space management of the REO Tutoring Center, including opening and closing the space, as needed.
Maintain open communication with supervisor and report any concerning behaviors from students to provide applicable resources
This position is considered a 'mandated reporter,' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA) and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment
Other duties related to REO Tutoring Center initiatives may be assigned at the discretion of the supervisor
Complete required HR on-boarding paperwork and assigned online Canvas training modules before first shift
Must be a current SDSU undergraduate student with second-year standing and above and enrolled at least part-time. Graduate students will not be considered for this position
Minimum SDSU GPA of 3.5 and in good academic and judicial standing with the university with a commitment to academic success and excellence
Minimum A- in lower-division courses for: Biology, Chemistry, ENS, Physics, and/or Psychology
Interested in tutoring and helping students of varying ages and diverse backgrounds with varying knowledge regarding the university and education system
Possess maturity, approachability, dependability, patience, and flexibility to model positive, appropriate, and professional behavior and maintain strict confidentiality
Strong organizational, communication (written, verbal, public speaking, facilitation), and programming skills with ability to think critically, communicate effectively, and be detail-oriented
Strong interpersonal skills with ability to work, dialogue, facilitate, and maintain positive relations professionally, effectively, cooperatively, and collaboratively across diverse communities and constituents
Able to work in groups and independently while managing time and multiple task
Committed to academic success and excellence
Takes initiative and is self-driven
Involved in student life and/or student organizations at SDSU
Previous tutoring experience
Demonstrated commitment to leadership and University involvement
