WHAT IS A STAR CENTER?
STAR (Students Taking Academic Responsibility) Centers are academic resource centers for residents. The centers help create a positive, academically oriented environment to help students achieve academic success. The centers are open to all residents, regardless of building assignment
FIRST-YEAR COMMUNITIES: CHAPULTEPEC & TENOCHCA
Monday - Thursday:
1:00 PM - 10:00 PM
FIRST-YEAR COMMUNITIES: MAYA, SCP-NORTH, & UNIVERSITY TOWERS
Monday - Thursday:
1:00 PM - 7:00 PM
SECOND-YEAR COMMUNITIES: CUICACALLI, GRANADA, & SCP-S
Monday - Thursday:
2:00 - 7:00 PM
Regularly: $16.50/Hr
**rates may change on a semester basis.
This position requires a minimum of 6 hours per week and a maximum of 20 hours per week.
Hours will be regular each week but may vary depending on programming needs in the evening.
Before we start you on your journey for success, we have a few requirements for the job:
Complete online training via assigned Canvas modules
Attend In Person training during the first week of Fall semester (Date TBD)
Ongoing training to be completed throughout the year
Minimum of 6 hours a week of work
Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75
Must be a current San Diego State University student (Second-year or older)
Must be in good academic and judicial standing with San Diego State University
Interest in educating and mentoring students of varying ages and backgrounds
Patient and positive demeanor as SCAs will be working with students of varying knowledge regarding the university and education system
Demonstrated commitment to leadership and University involvement
Commitment to academic success and excellence
WHAT IS A STAR Center Assistant?
STAR Center Assistants are San Diego State University students with successful academic backgrounds. The STAR Center Assistant (SCA) program is designed to assist first- and second-year residential students in transitioning to San Diego State University successfully. SCAs serve as academic role models for students and provide basic peer-advising and academic support. Through this position, SCAs will be assisting residential students in learning how to read and use academic success tools such as Degree Evaluation, MyMap, and the university catalog. Additionally, the SCA will meet individually with residents to discuss course scheduling, academic/department resources, goal setting, etc. During the Spring semester, SCAs will meet with residents on Academic Probation to discuss the academic probation policy and resources to help students remain successful at SDSU. This position will begin in the Fall semesters, and interviews will be conducted on a rolling basis until positions are filled.
Conduct individual mentoring sessions with assigned residents using a prepared mentoring curriculum
Record details from each session in online journal and log attendance via the CheckPoint Presence mobile app at every meeting
Provide guidance and support to students in a variety of areas, including academic skill development, campus involvement, personal issues, and navigating the university environment
Assess the needs of individual students and refer to resources as necessary
Attend regular team meetings with supervisor and other mentors
Maintain open communication with supervisor. Report any concerning behaviors from students to provide applicable resources
Act as a positive and professional role model for students
Plan and execute STAR Center programs
Attend all professional development involvements and training
Other duties as assigned
