Assessment Guide

Assessment Information

This course covers just a section of the continuum of learning. With this understanding in mind, assessments of the various elements of music making are made along the foundation of Bloom’s Taxonomy, in line with Gagne’s levels of learning and Lonis & Haley's four pillars of music learning.


Formative assessment opportunities include but are not limited to:

  • How a learner plays in rehearsal with the whole group

  • How a learner plays in sectionals, or section-specific rehearsal moments

  • How a learner plays in performance assessments or practice check-ins

  • What a learner says in group discussion

  • What a learner says in individual discussion

  • What a learner writes during written reflections


Summative assessment opportunities include but are not limited to:

  • How a learner performs in formal playing assessments

  • How a learner reflects on the experience of performing
