Our (amazing) Piano

The KSS Music Program is privileged to own and care for one of the nicest pianos in any bandroom anywhere in the country, a top-tier concert grand piano built by Estonia Pianos in Tallinn, Estonia. A 9 foot concert grand piano is, with very few exceptions, the largest grand piano manufactured by any piano maker. Due to the length and tension of its strings and the area of its larger soundboard, a concert grand piano is capable of a richer and more nuanced tone than smaller pianos. A 9 foot piano is the flagship instrument in all but two major piano manufacturer's lines, and is the only acceptable instrument on any serious performance stage worldwide.

In his famed publication The Piano Book, author and piano researcher Larry fine divides piano manufacturers into 5 tiers of quality, from the best-avoided to the most desirable at any cost. Mr. Fine rates Estonia pianos in the top tier, alongside Steinway, Yamaha Artist models, and Kawai's handmade Shigeru instruments.

Top tier 9 foot pianos like the Steinway model D and Yamaha CFX cost upwards of $200,000, so how did our students end up with an instrument of this calibre? Check back soon for the whole story!
