Park View 2nd Grade

Throughout the year we will be focusing on three main types of writing:

Personal Narrative

Students will write about personal events being able to introduce a topic, provide details in sequential order, and end with a closure.

Informative

Students will write informative pieces that introduce a topic, provide researched facts, and end with a closure. Using multiple resources to research a topic will be introduced.

Opinion

Students will write opinion pieces. They will be able to state their opinion, give reasons to support their opinion, and end with a closure.

Your child will begin the year with writing short sentences and will be able to to write full paragraphs at the end of second grade. Through engaging topics, we will help your child develop well-constructed sentences focusing on capitalization, punctuation, correct grammar, and adding good details. We will also focus on editing and revising our work before making a published version.

Throughout the year we will also be focusing on six traits of writing:

Ideas

Students will express their ideas clearly, so the reader is interested and engaged, and support their ideas with rich details.

Organization

Students will organize their writing so their introduction will grab the reader's attention, use smooth transitions between ideas, sentences, and paragraphs, and divide their ideas into clear paragraphs.

Voice

Students will surprise or delight readers with sincerity, and express who they are through their writing.

Word Choice

Students will use rich and powerful words to give energy to their writing, while sounding natural and appropriate.

Sentence Fluency

Students will have a natural flow and rhythm to their writing, using sentences of different length, and beginning their sentences with a variety of words,

Conventions

Students will use proper capitalization, punctuation, grammar and spelling, while also using neat handwriting.
