Our guided math lessons will follow the format below.
We will start with a review of the previous day's lesson. This helps students connect and reflect on what they have learned. Next, the lesson learning targets will be shared with students for today's lesson. This is important for students to know what is expected of them. Then, students will see several problems modeled by on the board with step-by-step details.
Now it's time for students to try out the problems themselves! Working on their own, they will show their work using their math journals. As they work, I will walk about the room asking students questions about their thinking, guiding them as they practice, and will intervene if I see that anyone may need my help. These practice problems will be very similar to their daily homework sheet they will bring home.
Sharing our thinking is an important part of the learning process. Math can be solved many different ways, and we want to highlight all the ways students think in our classroom! After working independently, students will share their work with the class. This will help them be able to explain how they finished the problem. They will learn to gain confidence and pride as they succeed in each lesson. Positive compliments will be encouraged to help build a supportive classroom community.
Along with our guided lessons your child will be placed in flexible math groups to help encourage social skills, differentiated learning, and engagement. Students will continuously be assessed throughout each unit to see their level of understanding. When learning has been achieved, students will be placed into a new group to challenge their skills and develop their thinking. All groups will work on the same concept, but in different ways.
