Helping each student find success in reading is our main goal. Reading is a lifelong skill that needs to be developed early on. Not only is it essential, but we want to make it fun for our 2nd graders. We hope to keep your child engaged and enthusiastic about reading!
Through read alouds, small guided groups, and independent reading students will develop the skills necessary to become good readers. Listening and speaking skills are incorporated in our instruction. Discussions occur often using comprehension questions to guide our whole group instruction.
Along with our whole group instruction, each student will receive a Reader for each unit as an additional component to our curriculum. The stories in the Unit 1 Reader are short and simple. We will slowly get your child back into reading. As we go through the units, the Readers will become more challenging and increase in length.
We strongly encourage students to practice oral reading with a partner. Here are some tips on different ways to do partner reading while at home:
Have your child read aloud to parents/guardians or siblings
Take turns reading the stories with your child
Ask your child to make predictions and ask questions while reading
Offer feedback or guidance while reading
Ask your child to summarize the story
Give praise often
